This module forms part of the Core Curriculum.

  • It requires 30 minutes preparation.

  • It can be taught in 1 hour to 1 hour and 1/2.

Teaching approach

As with all modules, familiarise yourself with the NPMT principles before preparing your session.

Management and prevention of venous thromboembolism is a part of the medical care of every patient who enters a hospital. In this module students will develop a firm understanding of the principles and practice of VTE prevention as well as the identification and management of pulmonary embolus.

The module seeks to teach students how to

  1. Understand the physiological principles of Virchow’s triad and risk factors for venous thromboembolism

  2. Manage DVTs and PEs, including:

    1. Their presentation

    2. Their diagnosis

    3. Their treatment

  3. Understand mechanical and pharmaceutical prevention and treatment of VTEs

  4. See how prophylaxis works in the inpatient setting including:

    1. Assessing the risk of every patient

    2. Assessing the potential contraindications of prophylaxis

    3. Prescribing an appropriate prophylactic regime.

One approach to this session is to first begin with an interactive discussion of the pathophysiology and presentation of VTE and PE, outlining the approach to risk stratification, prevention and management and then allowing students to practice this approach in patient scenarios.

Providing students with the chance to apply their newly revised knowledge allows them to build confidence with managing the complexities of a ‘real’ patient in a safe environment while enjoying an engaging and interactive session.

Other Resources

  • Adult VTE Risk Assessment Tool

    • This can be accessed online or in hardcopy from medical wards and is also included in the curriculum pack

  • Risk calculators

    • MDCalc and other free mobile apps have common risk scores including the Well Criteria and PERC score. This also provides opportunity to discuss with students the benefits and limitations of online resources and risk scores and the importance of their own clinical judgement
