It can be taught in 1.5 hours
Teaching approach
As with all modules, familiarise yourself with the NPMT principles.
session learning objectives:
Define cirrhosis including the difference between compensated vs decompensated cirrhosis
Outline the aetiology of cirrhosis by identifying the common causes and using surgical sieve to systematically create a differential list
Recognize that cirrhosis is definitively diagnosed via biopsy, but often is able to be diagnosed via a constellation of history, clinical signs + investigation findings
Become familiar with 2 prognostic scoring systems for cirrhosis – Child Pugh and MELD scores
Outline the treatment goals for cirrhosis including prevention of complications
Tips & Tricks on running an effective session:
Highlight the difference between compensated and decompensated cirrhosis and difference in prognosis
Encourage the use of surgical sieve to systematically identify the more uncommon causes of cirrhosis eg. VITAMIN CDEF
Highlight the importance of clinical exam for cirrhosis diagnosis, because symptoms in absence of decompensation are often absent/non-specific – Talley and O’Connor has an excellent guide
Encourage an systematic approach to investigations and treatment
