Introduction
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is comprised of two major disorders: Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). They are both chronic, relapsing, immune-mediated inflammatory bowel disease, and are associated with a range of extra-intestinal manifestations. These disorders have both distinct and overlapping histopathologic and clinical characteristics. They present most commonly during adolescence and young adulthood, but some studies suggest a bimodal age group with a second peak between 50 and 80 years of age. Genetic, infectious and environmental factors play an important role in their etiology, but their pathogenesis still remains poorly understood. This resources hopes to explain more about this disease

Teaching approach
As with all modules, familiarise yourself with the NPMT principles.
session learning objectives:
Differentiating both clinical and pathological features of Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD)
Identifying Extra-intestinal manifestations of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Identifying differential diagnosis and excluding other illnesses that have similar presentations
Be able to systematically approach diagnostic evaluation process
Understand the acute and long-term management of IBD, and escalating management according to disease severity
Understand the role of Immunomodulatory drugs used in IBD and the importance of pretreatment screening
Understand what is required during routine follow up
Tips & Tricks on running an effective session:
Be as interactive as possible
A case study is provided within this curriculum pack to be incorporated into teaching session (Feel free to use cases that you have encountered in your own experience/clinical practice)
Case study can be broken down into parts as you go along each section to prompt discussion
Conversely, it can also be presented at the end to help summarize/ consolidate the lesson
IBD is a big topic and this curriculum pack is quite content heavy. It is important to streamline and direct teaching session appropriately depending on the level of medical students. Generally:
Focusing on identifying differential diagnosis can help students have a more systematic approach towards the diagnostic evaluation process
Focus on general concepts, helping students differentiating between UC and CD in regards to clinical presentation, assessing severity of disease, and goals of treatment
Understanding how treatment decisions are made
Focus on classes of drug therapy of IBD, identifying their role in induction or maintenance therapy, and their pre and post treatment screening tests
