O & G Emergencies

Introduction

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Emergencies aims to prepare students in approaching common O&G presentations to the Emergency Department, such as lower abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding in pregnancy. It focuses on the importance of a targeted obstetric and gynaecological history and examination in helping to determine the necessary investigations and appropriate management for various conditions.

Teaching approach

As with all modules, familiarise yourself with the NPMT principles.

When teaching this module, aim to emphasise the importance of history and examination, which direct the formulation of a differential diagnosis and the necessary investigations and management.

The module seeks to teach students how to:

  1. Provide a basis for the assessment and management of common O&G presentations to the Emergency Department

  2. Understand the physiology of early pregnancy

  3. Understand common causes of bleeding in early pregnancy

  4. Consider gynaecological causes of abdominal pain as part of a differential diagnoses for young women
