Paedatric Respiratory Illnesses

Paedatric Respiratory Illnesses

Introduction

Respiratory illnesses are common in children and infants and make up a large proportion of presentations both in general practice and the emergency department. This session builds on students formal teaching, focusing on developing a tailored history and examination to identify and discriminate between common respiratory conditions. Students are also taught early management of common conditions and how to recognise the at-risk child.

Teaching approach

As with all modules, familiarise yourself with the NPMT principles prior to planning your session.

Session aims and objectives

  1. To understand the wide scope of differentials in the presentation respiratory distress

  2. To demonstrate a tailored history taking process for initial assessmen

  3. To be able to perform a thorough systems examination for a child presenting with respiratory symptom

  4. To identify key early investigations in evaluation of different respiratory illnesses

  5. To feel confident identifying early treatment approaches for a child in respiratory distress

  6. Identify key history and examination findings for different respiratory illnesses

  7. To recognise the risk factors for severe respiratory illnesses in children

Tips & Tricks:

  • Many of these conditions present similarly, focus on the differences between common conditions

  • As in all teaching worked examples are great to stress important points- in this session a useful method is to have the same or similar presentation for a number of conditions that students can then discriminate between

  • Try not to get too focused on the fine details of management, focus on the examination and assessment and direct students to clinical guidelines for specific management information
