Teaching approach
As with all modules, familiarise yourself with the NPMT principles.
this session aims to:
Give an overview of the epidemiology of, and risk factors for, septic arthritis
Outline the pathophysiology and common pathogens causing septic arthritis
Give students a framework to effectively work-up a patient for septic arthritis, including history, examination and investigations
Discuss the initial management for septic arthritis, and consider operative and long-term management thereafter
Tips & Tricks on running an effective session:
Encourage students to think of relevant differentials for a septic joint and how they would differentiate between alternative presentations
Use your own experience with cases plus pictures/imaging to keep students engaged while allowing them to practice diagnostic skills
The septic joint is often a complex presentation requiring multidisciplinary management- have students consider the possible complications of a septic joint and which specialists they may need to involve
